Since its inception in 1961, Ecma International has developed standards for information and communication technology (ICT). Ecma International is a not-for-profit industry association of technology developers, vendors and users.

Ecma International is driven by industry to meet the needs of industry, generating a healthy competitive landscape based on differentiation of products and services.

Ecma International is the inventor and main practitioner of the concept of "fast tracking" of specifications drafted in international standards format into ISO/IEC JTC 1, where Ecma International has the status of an A-liaison, which is virtually equivalent to a national body without voting rights. Since the start of JTC 1 in 1987 till mid 2003, 90% of the total of 232 submissions for fast-track processing in JTC-1 have come from Ecma International.

Currently, Ecma International is developing Standards and Technical Reports in the following areas:

Product safety: a generic standard, both for ICT and Consumer Electronics. The Ecma standard is used by IEC TC108 to create the new IEC standard 62368 which will eventually replace IEC 60950 and IEC 60065
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Acoustics: noise levels and measurement methods for ICT equipment
Product-related environmental attributes including environmental design considerations for electronic products
Magnetic tapes (3,81 to 12,7 mm wide) and cartridges including AIT, DDS, (Super)DLT, DTF, LTO/Ultrium
Optical disks (80 to 356 mm diameter) and cartridges including MO, Phase change, WORM, CD-ROM, DVD (Read-Only, RAM, -RW, +R and +RW)
Communication, networks and interconnection. Many of these about 70 standards are developed under a co-operation agreement with ETSI. These are standards for Private Integrated Services/Corporate Networks (PISN/CN) including architecture, services, signalling, protocols, numbering, naming, terminal connection, interworking via Internet (e.g., via SIP, in co-operation with IETF), interconnection with LANs and with public/private WANs, private user mobility (PUM) services and protocols: narrowband ISDN, broadband ISDN, QSIG
Computer Telecommunications Interface (CTI) including CSTA and a Web Services Description Language (WSDL) for CSTA
General purpose scripting language ECMAScript, which is the standard for JavaScript, Jscript and other scripting languages
Programming languages and environments including C#, Eiffel, Common language Infrastructure used in .NET and related implementations.

The promulgation of these standards and TRs, which is the second most important Ecma International objective, is done by making these publications available - via the web and on CD-ROM - free of charge and by allowing their free copying.
