Generic Consumer Requirements
in ICT standardization
extracted from the ANEC report
Interim ICTSB response
1. It should become evident to consumers what is an advertisement and what is not.
2. Accountability: Traditional legislation and voluntary codes of practice should be enforced equally for Internet advertising. Not for standardization
3. As a consequence of the Design for All concept, special attention should be paid to the needs of those who lack computer literacy skills. Not for standardization
4. Special attention should be paid to visually disabled users. The modern Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) such as Windows and the use of advanced images on the Web (e.g. Java) cause problems for users of audio readout systems. Web pages should be accessible to all consumers, and text-only alternatives should be available (see, for instance, the WAI-Guidelines (Web Accessibility Initiatives) of World Wide Web Consortium (www.w3.org/WAI opens a new window). Specifications are available. This recommendation addresses implementation and not standardization.
5. The 'error tolerance and system stability' should specifically address the protection of the system and consumer from so-called computer viruses. Anti-virus software should be standardised.
