Earlier this year the ICTSB started a review of RFID standardization issues in the context of regulation and policies. Standardization is often mentioned as a tool supporting policies and legislation
It had been recognized that a large number of standards organizations and fora and consortia are contributing to specify RFID and to consider its application in specific domains. Interoperability of products in a multi-vendor environment is also an essential goal of standardization, and, again RFID is no exception.
In 2006 the European Commission launched and completed a public consultation. As a result new activities had been initiated to achieve both the consumer protection as well as the competitiveness of industries. Further action is now under way, and the European Standardization Organizations are supporting a European Commission exercise in stakeholder consultation.
Based on the EC Communication COM(2007)96 final
an initial ICTSB document
had been produced to list activities in various bodies and to identify the standardization items from the Commission papers. The update is maintained as document RFID standards activities
