It has been widely accepted that standards can play a significant role to open the benefits of the Information Society to all citizens in Europe by providing guidance and a clear framework for developers who wish to make their products and services accessible to all.
A dedicated Working Group (WG) of the ICTSB called the Design for All and Assistive Technologies Standardization Co-ordination Group (DATSCG), addresses the area of eAccessibility. This WG aims to be a single standardization entry point for people with disabilities and the organisations that represent them.
DATSCG was created as a follow-up action to Standardization Mandate (M/273
) on “Design for All and Assistive Technologies in the field of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT)”.
Standardization Mandate M/283
is related
to this but does not restrict its scope to ICT. Standards developers
find basic information in CEN/CENELEC
Guide 6
,
which is based on ISO/IEC Guide 71: "Guidelines for standards
developers to address the needs of older persons and persons with
disabilities".
Current focus is on Standardization Mandate M/376
which relates to European Accessibility Requirements for Public Procurement of Products and Services in the ICT domain.
